Limbah padat atau sampah memang menjengkelkan. Sampah membuat lingkungan menjadi kotor, kumuh, menjijikan dan tentu saja tidak sehat. Dengan semakin bertambahnya populasi penduduk, masalah sampah perlu diperhatikan dalam pengelolaannya sehingga aman dan tidak menimbulkan masalah bagi lingkungan.

Para ilmuwan sudah menemukan berbagai macam solusi untuk menangani sampah menjadi sesuatu yang lebih bermanfaat. Salah satu solusi tersebut adalah pemanfaatan teknologi pengkomposan untuk menangani sampah organik seperti onggok ubi kayu, ampas tebu, tandan kosong kelapa sawit, kulit kopi, limbah peternakan dan sampah rumah tangga untuk menghasilkan kompos yang berkualitas tinggi.

Pengomposan bersahabat dengan lingkungan

Selama ini masalah sampah lingkungan rumah tangga diselesaikan dengan cara membakar atau membuang langsung ke TPA. Kedua cara ini telah menimbulkan berbagai permasalahan lingkungan yang antara lain adalah tercemarnya tanah, air dan udara yang dapat menimbulkan berbagai macam penyakit.
Proses pengomposan merupakan proses penguraian materi organik menjadi menjadi pupuk kompos oleh mikroorganisme aerobik dalam kondisi yang terkendali. Pengendalian proses ini dilakukan dengan menjaga keseimbangan kandungan kandungan nutrien bahan baku, kelembaban, pH, temperatur dan aerasi optimal. Proses ini praktis tidak memerlukan tambahan zat kimia sehingga aman bagi lingkungan.
Sampah rumah tangga yang dikelola dengan teknologi pengomposan telah mengurangi volume sampah yang keluar dari rumah tangga hingga tinggal 30-40 % saja. Kompos dari sampah rumah tangga dapat dimanfaatkan untuk memperbaiki struktur tanah selain memberikan nilai lebih terhadap sampah menjadi sesuatu yang bernilai ekonomis, memberi lapangan kerja dan penghasilan tambahan.
